Wellness Care

Regular examinations are the key to keeping your pet healthy. Wellness exams help us develop a picture of your pet's overall health and are useful for detecting potential medical problems before they become difficult and expensive to treat.

As part of an examination, we check your pet's heart and lungs, examine the teeth and oral cavity, look for unusual lumps or swelling and test the joints and muscles for arthritis and swelling. During the exam, we discuss your pet's vaccination needs and ask questions about your pet's behavior, eating habits and other information. At Cummings Veterinary Hospital, LLC, we believe that working closely with you is a vital part of your pet's health care.

Vaccinations

Along with regular examinations, vaccinations are an essential component of your pet's health care plan. Vaccinations prevent a number of contagious diseases. Without vaccinations, many of these diseases can be fatal. Vaccinating your pet is a must!

Your pet is unique and his or her vaccination requirements are similarly unique. All pets are treated individually and evaluated for risk of disease. Vaccinations are then given accordingly

Microchipping

If your pet is lost, you want him or her returned home as quickly as possible. A microchip is an effective way to ensure your pet returns home safely. A microchip is about the size and shape of a grain of rice and is implanted underneath your pet's skin (usually between the shoulder blades) in a procedure similar to a vaccination. Each microchip is encoded with identifying information about your pet. Veterinary hospitals and animal shelters across the country are equipped with special scanners capable of detecting and reading microchips; if your pet is missing, his or her microchip is scanned and the information it contains is used to reunite you and your companion.

Cummings Veterinary Hospital , LLC uses the Bayer ResQ microchip system. Please ask a staff member for more details about microchipping your pet. Microchipping allows you to purchase a lifetime license for your dog.

Diagnostic Laboratory

On-site diagnostic labwork results in fast, accurate treatment for your pet. Cummings Veterinary Hospital, LLC is equipped with an extensive on-site laboratory that enables us to perform pre-surgical labwork, along with any emergency labwork. Our laboratory is veterinarian-supervised and staffed by our team of trained, experienced veterinary technicians, who are capable of quickly and accurately interpreting your pet's results. As an added service, we utilize an outside reference laboratory for some diagnostic tests.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses high-frequency soundwaves to create a moving image of your pet's internal organs. Ultrasound produces highly-detailed images that allow us to evaluate the functions of the heart and detect the location and size of foreign bodies in your pet's stomach, among other diagnostic uses.
An ultrasound diagnostic examination is stress-free for your pet. Cummings Veterinary Hospital, LLC, we use the latest and most effective ultrasound technology

Radiographs

Radiographs (x-rays) are a powerful diagnostic tool that aid greatly in diagnosing your pet's medical problems. X-rays are used to diagnose a variety of conditions and we commonly use x-rays to diagnose cardiac, pulmonary, abdominal and musculoskeletal conditions. Our hospital also has the capability to perform renal and barium radiographic studies

Safety and Comfort

Your pet's safety and comfort during surgery are our highest priorities. Before surgery, we perform a complete examination of your pet, in order to detect any abnormalities that might complicate surgery. This exam also helps us develop an anesthetic protocol for your pet.

During surgery, we use modern anesthetic procedures so that your pet remains comfortable and pain free. All patients undergoing anesthesia are monitored for changes in blood pressure, heart rhythm (ECG), temperature, respiration rate, and blood oxygen levels using a Cardell 9500 HD Multiparameter Monitor. A trained veterinary technician is also present during surgery to monitor your pet's condition.

Your pet recovers from surgery more quickly when he or she is not in pain. Your pet receives pain medication before and after surgery. We develop each pet’s pain management protocol on a case-by-case basis. We may also send home pain management medication with your pet when he or she is discharged from the hospital.

Pet Dental Care

Dental care is a must for your pet! Clean teeth and a healthy mouth do more than just prevent bad breath - regular dental care helps stop periodontal disease, an infection that not only damages your pet's teeth, but his or her heart, liver and other organs as well. Studies have shown, after 3 years of age, 85% of pets have some degree of dental disease.

Periodontal disease is one of the most common conditions pets face. The good news is that it's easy to prevent. Routine dental cleanings and a home dental care regimen go a long way toward stopping periodontal disease before it starts. Plaque and tartar buildup on your pet's teeth can lead to swollen, bleeding gums. If left untreated, the bacteria that forms from plaque and tartar can enter your pet's bloodstream and infect other internal organs. If your pet is experiencing difficulty chewing, red and swollen gums, excessive drooling or pawing at his or her mouth, please bring him or her in immediately for a dental exam.

Cummings Veterinary Hospital, LLC performs routine dental cleanings and tooth extractions as necessary. Our veterinary technicians are trained to perform all of our dental cleanings and preventive care. A veterinarian evaluates each pet and performs any extractions that might be needed.
